France has universal healthcare, but it is not entirely free. Once registered with CPAM (Ameli), roughly 70% of medical costs are reimbursed. The remaining 30% can be covered by complementary health insurance (mutuelle). Since 2018, students are covered directly by the general social security regime. There is no longer a separate student social security contribution.
