Do I need to have taken a French course to register?

No. The DELF has no prerequisite training. You register at the level you feel ready for. Most Alliance Française centres offer mock tests to help you self assess.

What if I fail one section?

A score below 5 in any one of the four sections is an automatic fail, even if your total is above 50. You can register for the next session at the same level.

Pick the version, not just the level.

The DELF has three audience versions (Prim, Junior or Scolaire, Tout Public). At the same CEFR level the content is the same, only the themes and examples differ. Pick the version that matches your life stage, not the one your friend took.

Picking the level you sit

You can register at any level without proving the one below. The honest question is what the diploma is for.

If the diploma is for naturalisation or for a Master's: sit DELF B2 directly. A1, A2 and B1 add nothing to your file for those purposes.
If the diploma is for the carte de résident: DELF B1 is enough. The 2024 immigration reform set B1 as the threshold for the long term card.
If the diploma is for your CV without a specific administrative need: sit at the highest level you can pass comfortably. A B2 reads stronger than three lower diplomas.

ID rules for Indian candidates

The Indian passport is the safest document. Aadhaar is accepted at most Alliance Française centres in India, the PAN card only as a backup. The name on the ID must match the registration to the letter.
